Volunteering with BPPP

The Best Practices Policy Project (BPPP) is dedicated to supporting organizations and advocates working with sex workers, people in the sex trade and related communities in the United States. We produce materials for policy environments, address research and academic concerns and provide organizations and advocates with technical assistance. Everything that we do is guided by principles that protect the rights of people who engage in commercial sex in all its forms. BPPP is a member of the US Human Rights Network, the Network of Sex Work Projects and the Association for Women’s Rights in Development.

Our organization is lead by volunteers and the spirit of community organizing. From time to time we seek volunteers as below.

Website and Archival Volunteer for SharmusOutlaw.com, approx 4 to 8 hours per month (posted Jan 31, 2017): BPPP is looking for a volunteer to update periodically the website dedicated to the life and works of Sharmus Outlaw (transgender leader for sex worker rights who passed away in July 2016). The volunteer will check the email associated with sharmusoutlaw.com to receive any materials sent from the online form on the site. The volunteer will create short blog postings approximately once a month from these materials and upload any photos/videos or other materials on other pages on the site as needed. The volunteer will also research and seek other methods of ensuring that Sharmus Outlaw legacy is maintained in other archives and locations dedicated to maintaining the history of trans women, sex workers and other communities relating to Sharmus’ work such as religion, human rights, and histories of grassroots organizing. This may be done by contacting other institutions, sending archival materials electronically, and ensuring that search terms relating to Sharmus Outlaw are present in archives. BPPP can provide support for childcare, local transportation, phone/communication and other similar expenses relating to the tasks up to a total of $500 per year. The approximate time allocation needed for volunteering would be no more than 8 hours per month. If interested please send a short email to bestpracticespolicyproject @ gmail.com. This volunteer search is open only until we find the right person. This volunteer position may expand should there be an interest in establishing other memorials to Sharmus’ work through a scholarship fund, public event or other action.
