SWR Working Group

Currently the Sex Worker Rights Working Group organizes primarily in regards to actions at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW). The Working Group is organized by five lead sex worker rights organizations emerging from our Coalition that has been working on UN Mechanisms since 2019. The Sex Worker Rights Working Group is an informal space into which we invite folks and organizations from around the world who are dedicated to our rights to share information.

The Best Practices Policy Project has been working on engaging with women’s rights related issues at the United Nations since at least 2005. In 2010 during the first Universal Periodic Review of the United States, we began working with Desiree Alliance in partnership on UPR reporting. During further human rights actions and reporting other groups joined us in 2019 and we coalesced strongly into a coalition during the COVID-19 pandemic. Plans for developing a CSW working group led by us — sex workers and trans people — began in 2022 and gained momentum in 2023 when the Best Practices Policy Project received ECOSOC status.
